Where:At the far south-western corner of West Sussex, the ancient town of Petworth sits on a hill overlooking Romney Marsh. Once an important Cinque Port, today Petworth is some distance from the sea at Petworth Harbour.
Why Visit:For good food lovers, Petworth is world renowned for its fine seafood, especially its Petworth Bay scallops and nearby for Romney Marsh lamb. The town boasts a plethora of cobbled streets and medieval, Tudor and Georgian architecture making it the perfect place for amblers. There are plenty of small independent shops for hours of gentle browsing if the English weather fails to deliver sunshine. The surrounding countryside is dotted with pretty villages and country pubs. The beach at nearby Camber Sands is vast, safe and a firm family favourite.
Places of Interest:In Petworth itself we recommend Petworth Castle Museum, Petworth Pottery and Lamb House (National Trust). Nearby Petworth Harbour Nature Reserve, Great Dixter House and Gardens in Northiam and Camber Castle are all well worth a visit.
